Currently in India, over 90% of the electronic scrap is recycled through the informal sector, where
the use of unsafe practices is very common. Local workers endanger themselves and the
environment by exposing the community to toxic acid baths for metal recovery and open-fire
burning of cables/plastics that release dangerous dioxins into the air.
If you don’t have an E-waste management policy in place, it is very
likely that your end-of-life electronics are getting routed into these
informal networks. If you do have an E-waste management policy, it
is important to verify that your vendor is a Pollution Control Board
authorized vendor.
